Finding Space for Your Unit's Site
The first step in creating a website for your unit, after speaking to your unit president and executive board about the need for a website, is to find a company that provides the physical space for your files on a server.
- If the school already has a website perhaps you could snag a portion of that space for your unit.
- Ask about the server space available to each school through sandi.net.
- Survey the school parents to see if anyone owns or works at a company that provides server space and would be willing to donate it to you.
- Call local providers and ask them to donate it to you.
- Ask the budget committee if there is room in the budget to pay a monthly hosting fee.
- If all else fails, and only if all else fails, find a free site.***
- Do Not use your personal web space to host the unit's site.
***Free sites tend to come with advertising which may not promote the purposes of the PTA. They also, in my experience, tend to be harder to work with.
Once you have found a company, you may have the option of coming up with your own name. Make it something easy to remember! A name like "myschoolpta.com" or "myschool.org/pta" is easy. Names like "myschool.com/website/parent/pta" are not.
Have several options in mind for names. Many names are already taken.
Speak to your provider about the use of .org versus .com.
