Nominating Committee Information
The nominating committee’s major role and responsibility is to nominate the best qualified nominee for each office. The chairman should ensure that meetings are scheduled to provide sufficient time to identify and consider all recommendations and suggestions.
Nominating committee members should be:
- knowledgeable about PTA;
- elected, not appointed, on merit and ability;
- willing to devote adequate time to the responsibilities involved and be aware of the importance of the assignment;
- familiar with the eligibility requirements and the qualifications necessary for the offices to be
- filled, as well as the responsibility of each office outlined in the unit’s bylaws;
- knowledgeable about the qualifications and abilities of potential nominees;
- able to give objective consideration to all nominees;
- able to express ideas and to defend their convictions;
- able to keep all deliberations confidential.
The best interest of the PTA must be the top priority when considering each nominee. The criteria listed below should be considered and evaluated. Each nominee:
- must be a PTA member of the unit for which he is nominated. The committee should be given a membership list from the association. Feeder school(s) and/or magnet school(s) in the area may provide suggestions. See Article V, Section 5 of the bylaws;
- must be enthusiastic and supportive of the PTA and must be fair, objective, and concerned for the well being and best interests of the PTA;
- should have some experience in PTA, although other organizational work may also be considered;
- should have knowledge of the organization and its role in the school and community;
- should be willing to give PTA a satisfactory level of priority and commitment including attendance at meetings;
- should be able to work well with people.
Members of the committee are not excluded from becoming nominees for elected office. If a committee member is being considered, the member should be excused from the meeting during the discussion regarding that office, but may return for the vote – which shall be by ballot.
Every effort should be made to provide a slate of officers that is balanced in terms of new as well as experienced officers and reflects the diversity of the school population. The committee is not obligated to nominate the president or any current officer eligible to serve a second term or to nominate automatically the executive vice president or first vice president for president. Each nominee must be evaluated equally and by the same criteria as all other nominees.
The nominating process may seem tedious. However, adherence to the suggested procedures will help ensure a successful outcome.
See the California State PTA Toolkit, Section 2.2 – Nominations and Elections, page 29, for more details.
